Living with an alcoholic is generally a rollercoaster of a ride. It’s hard for those around the drinker to understand that actually they can’t help themselves and usually family will find themselves affected deeply. It is a family disease, in as much as it affects the whole household. When things are good and the drinking is under control, then everyone is happy. But when alcohol takes over again, chaos and disorder reign.
Unpredictable Behaviour
It depends on who is the one with the problem as to how unpredictable behaviour will affect those around them, but the alcoholic can never be relied upon to behave in a proper fashion. Alcoholic parents obviously have a far reaching effect on children, causing chaos in the house. In a house where alcohol abuse is prevalent, there will be arguments and abuse, whether it’s physical or mental. The alcoholic will be drunk a lot of the time, very often aggressive or emotional. It’s a home filled with turmoil and confusion. Nobody knows from one day to the next what is going to happen.
Children
Children often blame themselves when they have alcoholic parents, thinking that it’s their fault that mum or dad drinks too much. They will often over-compensate for this by trying to help or plead with the drinker to stop. It can destroy childhoods and cause huge problems in later life, as they will grow up feeling unhappy and just spending most of their time wishing desperately that mum or dad was just a normal, loving parent instead of this crazy, drunken person who can be lovely one minute, filled with rage and violence the next. Alcoholic homes also have a very high incidence of physical and sexual abuse.
Partners
The husband or wife of an alcoholic will find life very difficult. Alcoholics are unreliable, often going missing through drunkenness, failing to turn up when they are supposed to, or turning up really drunk and defensive. Social occasions are a minefield, with the sober partner often having to apologise for behaviour, or even remove the person from a situation because they are out of control.
Domestic violence is a very common occurrence in relationships where alcohol is a problem, and arguments will happen often. Alcohol removes self control, and this leads to unacceptable behaviour and often aggression. Home life will be chaotic, with normal daily patterns such as eating dinner, keeping the house tidy and clean, having friends round or even paying bills completely disrupted and it’s completely normal for the partner of an alcoholic to find themselves supporting the drinker in every way. They will feel almost like they’re looking after a wayward child as the alcoholic cares little about what’s going on around them.
Lies and Deception
A real feature of alcoholism is deception. Lying about the quantity they have drunk, lying about where they have been, lying about giving up – these are all extremely common elements in an alcoholic relationship. It’s another extremely destructive pattern, as the person close to the alcoholic will often plead with them to stop, even try to help. It’s not going to work, the only person who can effect that decision is the alcoholic, and until that point it’s often usual for them to pretend they’re giving up or cutting down. But don’t be fooled, just when you think they have been sober for a couple of days, you’ll open a cupboard and find empties hidden away.
Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.
Remorse
Finally there is remorse to deal with. The alcoholic inevitably has to sleep and will very often wake up feeling perfectly dreadful. This is aside from any physical symptoms from the alcohol abuse itself, they will often feel awful about what they have done the day before, swear to get clean, apologise profusely to those they have hurt around them, and quite possibly mean every word of it. And hope fills the house. But the booze will take hold again and before long things are back on that rollercoaster.
The Recovering Alcoholic
Living with the recovering alcoholic has its challenges too, so be aware of that. That person will never stop being an alcoholic, however long they are sober. And relapses are common. That’s not to say it’s hopeless, there are many, many alcoholics who have taken control successfully, but it’s a continual process to stay on top of the disease and any partner or family of a recovering alcoholic must also be aware of that.
So I thought that was behind us, drinking still continued after work- a bottle of wine a night at least. But then the drink driving happened again. This time he did it in a work car and left the cans inside it. He drove for over 2 hours while he drank. The fact that it would have such a damaging effect on him and our family just didn’t register. Luckily I found the cars before he took the car back and we had it out. He admitted he had been drinking again whilst driving home and when he goes out to play cricket he will have more than the limit. I am stunned that he is prepared to put his families future and other peoples in danger. I just don’t understand it. I think he is a alcohol dependant rather than an alcoholic but I am terrified that he will end up as an alcoholic and I just can’t bare the idea of what our future will be. I also don’t have the strength to keep being let down.
I have booked him an appointment with our GP next week so hopefully that will help.
But for me I don’t know where to go. He is a brilliant dad and husband but I feel lost and don’t know where to turn. I can’t confide in anyone as I am so ashamed of what he has done and I feel I have lost trust in him and let down by the lack of thought he has shown his family by doing something so stupid and risking our future. Where do I go to deal with this as it’s upsetting me so much.
We have no physical relationship as he sleeps in share room. I told him needs help he says he know has problems but does nothing .
I love him but I can't stand the way its going I'm not happy my kids not happy .
Any ideas shall i just ask him to leave
we dont sleep in same room . have no physical relationship.
I ask him to stop but doesnt . i had enough .
Shall I just ask him to leave as ultimatum dont wotk.
I cant live like this anymore .
I have been with my partner on and off for 17 years he is a lot older than me by 20 years
We finally settle down 7 years ago he has always been a drinker but also holds down a full time job
We have 4 children too 12 months ago the drinking became more and more only in the evening during the week maybe 2 bottles of wine but come the weekend he would start at lunch time all the way through
Things got that bad I asked him so many times to cut it down enough was enough and I asked him to leave the house which he did
1 month later swore he would cut it down and did really well for 3 months
Then it built up again but this time was hiding it all Over the house
I confronted him he blamed many factors and left again this time for 2 months slept with many women and spent two months drininkg but still holding down his full time job as a truck driver
He then got in touch and said he thought he needed help would I help him
We made an appointment at the docs who said he didn’t have a problem but needed to change his lifestyle which he agreed on he had tests but I don’t no the results of these as he went alone for the results
He moved back in and now 4 months on he is back to hiding it in the house and drinking again I have already told him if I find anything he will be gone and this was the last time !!!!
What am I going to do I can’t work out if it’s a problem is it me thinking it is as i don’t drink
Not sure where to turn to or who to talk to he does not no I have found anything yet
He used to have Wednesday nights Off but now drinks then.
We have only seen a doctor because he was cut out of his parents will.
I worry for his health, he blames it on events 6 years ago but wont get therapy, his parents are unsupportive and call it a life style choice and refuse to offer help. He tried to talk to them and they were abusive the never cuddle him or show love in a physical way, but they do love him in there own way, as they have supported him financially for many years, his dad and mum are both heavy drinkers, but only drink at home, they have even said if he was drinking at home it wouldn't be a problem.
I'm trying to support him but it's clear that the family don't like the supportive approach and said that the plan my partner, myself and the doctor made is pointless and have written him off before he's had a chance to try.
If I mention him being an alcoholic they get angry and say he's not, he's just selfish and if chose to stop he could.
I now think I may be pregnant by him, that's worrying me sick, as he can't look after himself.
I've tried to speak to him and get him to attend rehab but he doesn't want to go.
At weekends this can start from early afternoon.
He drinks till he runs out of larger or passes out.
We have little to no social life together.
I worry when we do go out as to how much he will drink.
I feel ashamed of his behaviour, he is often defiant, argumentative, ocassionally aggressive, verbally abusive, telly me to get out.
He demoralises me, tells me I'm useless, lazy.
He shows little to no compassion ever, devoid of emotions at times.
In the mornings - sometimes he's sorry. Sometimes he's in denial. He can be argumentative and verbally aggressive when challenged.
My son and myself have a rollercoaster relationship with him.
I find myself telly my son to avoid any confrontation with him for fear of arguments and verbal abuse. Threats of physical abuse.
We have been together 12 years, married for 11. I am unhappy. The man I loved and married exists only about 5% of the time.
I dream of a safe, secure, quiet, unchallenged life with my son.
It is becoming quite dangerous as she leavesgas rings lit, unlit and filling the kitchen with gas. Crossing the road drunk. Falling off high stools. I have reachedthe end of the road.
cannot leave, I lack the income to support myself, but if I stay, I fear the continued abuse directed toward me by my mother. If I confront her about her alcoholism, I fear being thrown onto the streets to fend for myself.
I don't know where to turn. Please help me.
Things were going great then he was looking blurry eyed driving the boat we then had.I thought it was odd.He denied anything.Few dys later he kept reading and stopped doing basic things and I thought he smelt odd but he said it was the boat chemicals. Then he became aggressive and I found him in the oub and hiding cans of beer which hed never done before then I found empty vodka bottles in the wardrobe and confronted him he became aggressive belittled and shouted at me.
Then he went off and went missing .It was then his sister told me he was alchoholic.
He ran off to an ex girlfriends 200 miles away.i was in shock . He rang and said he was drunk and had run off to stop and that she got very angry and he was coming to meet me and was sorry/
I said it was very strange and he said it was a memory ptsd.
Things went great for a year then he came home waivering again.I said youv been drinking denial - this carried on with him crashing the van not working letting the dog out not dealing with any responsibilities for ten days then an exciting event was happening and he sobered up to come along.Home after aweek and having had a great time he was helping at the village fete and looked glazed again. Then the next day and he went missingThen appeared again leaving the keys in the car and the car windows open.He denied drinking but a bottle rolled out from under the seat and he said I put it there.
Heis usually an incredibly gentle talented man but he started shouting and tried to get out of the car while it was moving.
I let him out then drove back and got him to his relatives house half way home for a cup of tea,He ran and laid in the car and fell asleep.
When he woke up he peed in a hedge opposite in public then let the dog out and ran after it.He wouldn't get inor give me the dog so I drove home 12 miles and left him to walk.He lied and said he walked and bashed on the door.
I shut him out to sleep it off in the cabin .He continued three days police were called as he drove off in my car with little fuel and was 4 hours missing.
he was lucky to not get seen and breathlysed.Next day off on bike to get drink.
I gave him the dog to try stop him going three miles to the shop - no more booze.
Then he started smoking! Then I told him I would not give him a lift and he rode off on his bike and went missing and rang ten days later saying he loved this woman who was his ex partner was 200 miles away always had still partly drunk and that I should stop ringing her when I hadn't.He had never liked this woman having had many rows before and we were in a lovely new house had got a dog decorated put sheds up got many shared friends and family and he ran off to hide and hasn't come home yet.I am in shock at the level of denial and escapism. He says its because I don't
Yesterday started off great, giving him little jobs to do to keep him occupied etc etc, then to the loacal for sunday dinner and a couple, minumising the cash so we could only have a couple to wash food down with and me been the cash holder as we agreed. A few things triggered the depression in him whilst we was out and he then got the taste, sneeking the cash card out and gettin cash back. This morn at 2am, he decides to walk to his place with a lager in his hand, so I knew what the day held from then on. I called to see him this afters 4 double gins and 8 cans he'd had by lunch, so breaks my heart as i love him so much n know he loves me but loves the ale more, he said he wanted to do something about it that he didnt wanna loose me again, as he suffers depression ive told him to seek doctors advice and talk to someone, all he says is hes been there n it didnt help. Since this afters hes had another 8 cans,4 double gins and spoke to me on the phone saying hes ok now and hes reached happiness, doesnt make me feel to good I can tell ya! He was never as bad as the binge drinkin is now, he blames growing up stresses of life, but we all have our probs. I love this man to the moon and back and really feel when hes sober or just steady he my soul mate, I so want the normal guy back and although hes said he will go to a A.A group, I know he wont follow it through, tomorow morning he will wake up down and depressed and start over again, its heartbreaking!!
He lied and drank whisky behind my back.,shouted abusers at me. Gave me a huge black eye, broken nose, fracture to elbow, strangled me, pulled my hair out, beat me up and kicked me.
Yet he loved me! Only an alcoholic can decide if they want to deal with their drinking. I now realise he didn't want to. He wanted to marry me and have kids. I gave him chance after chance, nothing changed. Sorry all the time.
He will drink himself to death . I did love him, but love is not abuse. I left, it was hard and I cried. There was no choice. Don't suffer like I did , leave.
He also is awful to my teenage son,who keeps himself in his bedroom when he is about as scared of him.
I am constantly walking on egg shells as he changes mood so fast and it's like having 2 men living with me.
If there is no booze in house,I won't allow him to bring it in,he smuggles it in and if there isn't any he will start arguing so he can go back to pub or back to his flat to get drunk. He never remembers the awful things he says and the names he calls me but after 7 weeks I'm heart broken and already nursing the scars he is causing.
I know I should stop him coming back as my son and I can't live in fear and I'm heart broken,as will my family be but he won't change & cant see what else I can do.
Maybe it will take the harshness of being alone to wake up to what your doing,I don't know but do know I can't live in fear of alcoholism.
My heart goes out to anyone living with a loved one who is an alcoholic as its true, alcohol destroys families.
I've learnt the hard way and getting my heart broken from the man I love who is my everything when sober but a person I don't know or like when drunk.
In my own experience of loving an alcoholic, i had to stop the nagging and the screaming, manipuloating trying to control them, chasing all over town and obsessing about something I could not control. I am powerless over anyone other than my own actions. I cant sit all night worrying about someone else, worry is pointless it does nothing but keeps us stuck and overthinking. The overthinking is the next problem, we get stuck in the cycle of thining the most disturbing things that may never happen, then we start to panic. We are panicking about something that hasnt even happen.. that is in itself insanity.. right?
I educated myself on alcoholism so that i could better understand my loved one. I also read everything i could on codependency, in order to understand myself. Ilearned tools to help me cope with my alcoholic and also how to put myself first. I made myself top of my priorities as the alcoholic was already putting himself at the top of his, he did not need 2 people doing it. I learned that nothing changes if nothing changes. The alcoholic wasnt ready to change, so i started to change myself. There is no known cure for alcoholism. I am no longer trapped in the insanity of someone else's addiction. if he wishes to drink that is his business. My business is getting on with my journey.
I now run my own online support group supporting families and friends of alcoholics and addicts. I am on facebook look me up if you require more support than a page. I mean its a great page but you cant get the same support that you can get from a group of people that understand.
You didnt cause it
You cant control it
You cant cure it
You are not alone
You are important
You matter
I currently have a 4 month old my partner has started drinking again he seems to get angry if he can't have a beer, if we don't have much finance he will go to the extreme to borrow some money so he can get some alcohol or go up a social club. He also turns nasty and says horrible words after about 4. It seems he would rather being putting alcohol done his mouth rather than spend time with his family. I'm really confused because he wasn't like this whilst I was pregnant so I feel it's out of character. Any advice would be appreciated. I don't know if I should stick it out or leave him
So I've been putting up with nonsense for 3 years!
I highly doubt he will quit long term. he's quit for a month or two here and there but goes back to drinking shortly. He drinks and gets so weird, like stupid spacy.
I don't know what to do ...He saved me
I am left the memory of my brother crying in pain, Suffering and in agony. Hospital didn't care and I am taking my complaint further and I won't stop. I don't want anyone else to suffer like he did, my elderly mum couldn't cope she passed away soon after. Broken greiving sister
Please what can I do.? I will appreciate any help and support..do I have to move on and let him go? So So Hard..??
We have been married for almost 43 years and my husband is or was my best friend. We've often drunk socially but during the few years my husbands drinking has got out of control.
To try and put it in a short story is difficult.
Today he is waiting to see if he will get his driving licence back after a 12 month ban for not providing a specimen. He had an accident in his van and thank goodness none was hurt. He had been in rehab for a month a couple of years ago and has since been attending AA on and off but never really staying sober for more than a week or so. He has had plenty of help from drug and alcoholic units but he still secretly drinks. We have been away together for 3 weeks and he didn't drink once, it was a wonderful holiday.
Since we have been back, he is back to his old routine of drinking when I'm out and lying and hiding the drink. I know every time he drinks but he says I'm being stupid!
We are a close family and our youngest daughter is expecting her first baby in June. They have come home from Autralia to live to be nearer family. How can my husband not see what his drinking is doing to our family.
Last year we lost our beautiful 4 year old Grandson to Cancer and that has been very difficult for us all. My husband was drinking far too much before this tragedy but now is far worse.
He promise's and promise's the next day that he will never drink again and for me to help him and stick with him but I can't cope any longer. What can I do? I can't leave as I don't have anywhere to go and I do love the sober man. He is the best husband/father anyone could wish for except for this deceitful lying drinking. How will stop? I'm tormented every time I leave him on his own. I can't live like this :-( can anyone help with advice of what and where to go from here?
Thank you so much, sorry for the extremely long post. Feeling heartbroken tonight.
He has a good job earning good money but every month all the money is gone soon after pay day because of the debt he had run up. He's lost his licence through drink before I met him and has been injured twice when he was drunk.
I don't drink myself which gives him ammunition against any reasoning I try to make him see. He blames his thyroid as an excuse for the hot sweats and shaking he suffers.
The true unpredictability about his drinking is that he he doesn't do it every day, or at least I don't think he doesn't. He has a job where he can drink but can when he's away from it abroad or again at home. But when he drinks he doesn't have an off button. He drinks until he is drunk and then he becomes abusive verbally and just vile. I don't know him! Sad thing is that his aging parents have put up with this for over ten years now. It is destroyed them. They have given him money and nursed him through times when they feared for his safety when he was so drunk he couldn't stand. I'm at my wits end. I can't cope with this existence but I can't afford to leave. I have nowhere to go with no money and nobody I can talk to anymore. I just feel so alone and dread him coming home because I know it will mean more drinking and unpredictable behaviour which is what is destroying me. I truly feel suicide is my only escape but am scared to leave behind the shame. Can anyone help please. I'm desperate

So now she is miles away and I am clearing up behind a soab my son who does nothing all day but drags.me down ...
Love ..my son to bits but I don't know him "........
I have changed my number on so many occasions but after a few days felt guilty and worried he would fall off the wagon so I'd give him my new number. He always said if I didn't let him know about our son whilst in rehab it would effect his recovery. I have now changed my number again as Ss have told me now if I have any contact with him they will take my children away. I have blocked him on Facebook and he is not allowed near my house. It is so hard to do cos no matter how much I hate and resent him for what he has done to me and my kids I still love him. But I have to stay strong this time and not cave in for my kids welfare. I am awaiting domestic violence counselling. I have been to al non, only once as it came across they were blaming themselves for trying to control their alcoholic partners when in fact it is the alcoholic trying to control us. My ex would wind me up on purpose if I ever ignored him to get a reaction. He knew w
It is a shock for me to feel so lost and helpless now I am on my own he has changed my personality and self esteem much in the short years we have been together. He is also suffers from passive aggressive personality disorder thinking that he is not to blame for any wrong doing..He has been jealous of me socialising and woe betide if I talk to another man when we were out.. He even scared my grown up children from visiting as he was rude and unwelcoming to them in my house..Yes I have been a fool to get sucked into this and let this man overpower me but when you love somebody you always give them another chance and kid yourself you can help them to change..I realise this is not possible and I now limp away both mentally and physically scarred and hope I find the strength to regain the old me.. For anybody reading this I would urge you to take a good long look at your life and have the strength of cjarachter to think of your sanity safety and happiness and find an escape route..
We all endured and tolerated his drunkenness and associated hangovers throughout the last 25 years, some periods better than others, in the name of security and the love of a good man when sober, and I accept I was complicit in this. Now there's only one child left at home not only am I lonelier than ever, but I can't see my life continuing with his regular drinking. He has already started with the health issues, high blood pressure, obesity. I told him a year ago it was over but the kids persuaded me to give him a chance - how many chances over the years, i've lost count. But, again, for everyone else's sake I stayed. I can completely relate to the previously posted self preservative step way from him emotionally and loss of intimacy. To step over that line again would tell him that what he still does is ok with me, and it isn't.
He has cut down but he still has his regular 3/4 social outings a week, all involving alcohol and/or football, and all leaving me on my own for hours He is a lovely, kind person most of the time but the spectre of his social life is always hanging over me, the anxiety of not knowing whether he will be late or have had too much and I am sick of looking at the same 4 walls while he's out. He's always had a possessive streak which has prevented me doing a lot of things I probably would like to do over the years.
But, knowing that this time next year I will only have myself to house/feed/cloth etc I am slowly building my self confidence to reach the point of leaving to make the life I want for me. The exit plan. But the guilt of eventually leaving him is sometimes overwhelming and inconceivable, but I have to do the things I want to, life's too short. Even in the current climate, after all that's been said and done, he says he will always like a drink and will never give up completely, but one drink is never enough and ten is too many.
Loving the man, but leaving the drinker. So sad.
we both smoke and I am addicted to diet coke, I know that dose not help matters either because if I tell him to cut down his beer, he wants me to cut off my diet coke supply.
I am very venerable to becoming an alcoholic myself, I was in a abusive marriage before and I had a mental breakdown, I know have been diagnosed with bipolar and border line personality disorder.
I want to marry this man, I love him and we want to have a child together. I am really concerned that our relationship will breakdown because of his alcohol problem and I do not want to be one myself.
is it the alcohol that has caused him to be quiet and distant, dose it affect love making or erection problems. need help I need answers....CrY FOR HELP :-(
In answer to your question "why do we put up with it" the simple answer has to be that we love them - if we didn't it would be so easy to walk away and leave our troubles behind us. You say "you want out but don't know how" - what is it you want out of? Do you want "out" of the relationship or just out of the problems whilst staying in the relationship? Only you know the details of your own situation, but I would say to have a good look at your life... be HONEST with yourself about if your partner is willing and able to change, and if not, then think about getting a life apart. For me it was simple (if hard) - we didn't have any kids together so it was easy to start afresh - if that 's your decision, I would suggest that you put as much in place as possible (sort out somewhere to go, move clothing and personal items beforehand) then talk to him about what you intend to do (so long as it doesn't lead to violence) - maybe the fact that you're ready to leave will be the necessary push to make him change - if not then take a deep breath and make the break. For me it been about 6 weeks now since the break, and while it's still difficult, every day is a tiny bit easier. 2012 could be a good year for you - what your life is going to be like is entirely up to you...Good luck whatever happens - Happy new year
Some of you might think I'm being unfair leaving when she says that she's trying to cut down - but I truly believe that she will never give up whilst I'm still around. This has gone on for so long now that it's affected the whole family, everyone having their say and whilst maybe meaning well, they just inflame the situation even more. Sometimes as the song says "if you love someone, set them free"... I really hope I'm doing the right thing, but I fear that if I don't one or both of us will end up in a box.
I'm sorry if this all sounds sad and indulgent, it wan't meant to (I really am upbeat under all the pain and hurt) - I just hope she will come through this long dark tunnel she's in safe and well. Thank you for reading (if there's anyone out there) and if you're religious, please say a prayer for her.
Thank you again and I hope any problems you may have will subside too
Peter
I am at my witsend, my partner has a drink problem, but is he an alcoholic? He can drink when we go out and not to excess and is fine. However when he is on his own he will go and buy a bottle of Brandy and drink the lot often lying about it, thinking I can't tell he is drunk, he has driven into work and been sent home so far he has been lucky to keep his job. We live together and whilst he has had a bad childhood and as a result suffers with a stutter, I consider him to be a very fotunate man. We had a lovely weekend away, he was off today and when I rang him from work at 10.00am he wa drunk, denying it of course. Eventually today he has admitted he has a problem and given me all his money and cards. Where do we go from here, I love him to bits but after being in a violent previous relationship with a drinker not sure I can cope.
I'm a gay man in a civil partnership. We got married only 4 months ago, and since then my partner's drinking has got worse. It is like he is possessed when he is drunk. His eyes don't look right, he slurs his speech, gets picky and argumentative, and I can never do any right. I can see all the signs and have learnt to be passive and try not to get into arguments. I had the Police round a couple of months ago after he scared me in a drunken rage smashing things up. He never touched me, but his demeanour was so threatening.
He has been the victim of domestic violence, and I think this has a lot to do with his drinking. I try to be understanding and he has been to the Drug and Alcohol Abuse Team, gone through detox then fallen off the rails. He has stolen from a shop to feed his drinking habit, and this weekend taken an overdose because he does not want to see me hurt anymore. The thing is an overdose would hurt me more than anything, as I would lose the man I still love, despite everything, and despite the debt his drinking has got us into.
I feel that there is nothing more I can do to help, last night he flooded downstairs from us, because he had broken the bath. It was an accident, but he is not thinking straight. The flat is a mess, and he does not seem to care.
He has said he will go home and try to go on a rehab programme where he will be locked up for six weeks, which I hope he will and sort himself out. I love him more than anyone or anything, but am not sure that continuing to stick by him is going to be the answer as I am sure that he will lapse again.
Life is such a mess. In the meantime I go to work to try and pay the bills whilst he sleeps off his latest hangover, jobless because he has lost the plot.

Finally, I have read all the comments above with such care and my heart goes out to you all, because I myself am walking the tightrope.
